Book this tour! At first I was so cold but they provided warm blankets! Karl was amazing - she is a gifted educator who presents well. I learned quite a bit that night. Karen CMarch 17, 2026Excellent experience Really enjoyed our stargaze experience. Cute setting tears laid out and blanket supplied whilst we were given some information about Night Sky. Hot chocolate where then handed out feeling some interesting facts and where I told about the telescopes that we would be looking through. We then took turns looking through two telescopes one was a photographic telescope taking pictures of the Night Sky and the other one standard we got to look at cool things like the galaxies and nebula’s, Jupiter and the moon the evening ended with marshmallows by the fire really enjoyable experience overall. Noyo RJanuary 31, 2026Do yourself a favor and book with Chameleon! We have done 2 different Stargazing tours at Lake Tekapo. Chameleon Stargazing was far superior compared to the more commercial company in town. Chameleon has state of the art telescopes and shows you mind blowing Nebulas, incredible star clusters and all planets available. Everything was very clear and so beautiful it made me cry. ☺️ Staff was exceptional and even on a partly full moon night we were enchanted. We received fantastic keepsake photos of everything we saw and a photo of us against the night sky. They even did a special one for me holding a star because it was my birthday. (To contrast, this time we went to the summit for a different experience and were disappointed. Staff was excellent, but the equipment seemed outdated, images were small and not clear, sky objects we saw were not really impressive, there were too many people and no fun memory keepsakes. Also it was twice the price. We did get to see Lake Tekapo under a near full moon which was quite impressive, but not actually part of the tour).Posted on Tripadvisor

MOK was an incredible guide, she taught us so much about the night sky. The telescope part of the tour was amazing - she showed us galaxies, nebulas and Jupiter! We also got a professional photo taken and got sent all the professional telescope photos of the night for free which I thought was such an amazing additional touch. Although it was very cold, the guides gave us comfy chairs, blankets and even a hot chocolate in a keep cup we could take home!We saw so many stars! You can see them all with your naked eye it’s incredible. They have telescopes to see constellations, stars and planets up close. They really spent the time explaining what they were showing us. Your knowledge of astronomy, your sense of humour and your program for the night was wonderful. Our guide was super knowledgeable and told great stories that kept us hooked the whole time. We loved every minute and came away with a new appreciation for the universe. This was our first stargazing experience and we loved it!!!!! my kid enjoyed it more than us , he asked a lot of questions and our guide answered them really well , we got to see nebulas, the moon , galaxies. The Southern lights were an added bonus. They provided warm blankets, hot chocolate as well. At the end of the tour we had marshmallows by the campfire. overall a great experience. We loved the small size of the group and sitting in comfy chairs with warm blankets looking up at the sky - so much better than if we had to stand with necks craning upwards! The warm drinks were an added touch, as were the marshmallows to round off the evening 😀 We saw 8 shooting stars, great views through the telescopes and the photo was fab. Pioneer31409978096March 24, 2025Memorable experience It was a cloudy late evening and not a favourable weather for star gazing. We had come all the way from India and were very keen for this tour. George heard us and changed to different times to accomodated us, kept waiting for the weather to clear so we could have our first close look at the stars. Our session that was scheduled at 9:15 pm finally happened at 1:30 am. When we arrived, the young astronomer showed us various key things in the night sky such as the Southern Cross. Meanwhile we were served hot chocolate in recyclable cups that we were invited to take with us. Then we looked through two telescopes and were shown nebula and new stars. We were photographed with the night sky as our background and finally given skewers to roast marshmallows over the fire. Everything was explained in such a way that we could understand, and all questions were welcomed and answered. It was a great experience. penny vMarch 11, 2025One of the standout experiences of our NZ holiday - highly recommend. This was an amazing night. We looked at other Lake Tekapo stargazing opportunities and so glad we chose this one. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable and so enthusiastic. Leant loads and stared with wonder at the Milky Way, Southern Cross ad a host of other stars, constellations, nebulas and galaxies. The information leading up to the event was first rate with contact made on the day, clear instructions, etc etc. Sadly it clouded over towards the end, and he was kind enough to offer a half refund, but we'd had such an awesome time, we refused. We got hot chocolate, got to keep the really great cups it was served in, marshmallows round a fire, comfy chairs, blankets - what an experience.

Being part of such a small group made the experience feel really personal and efficient, and she was happy to answer all of our questions. We were lucky enough to see some of the zodiac constellations with our bare eyes, and Estella even pointed them out for us with her laser pointer. We were provided with blankets, which was great, but I definitely recommend layering up and wearing a thick pair of socks. We had the chance to look through two different telescopes, and each one gave us a unique view of the night sky. Of course, the stars were beautiful, but what amazed me even more was the mystery and vastness of the universe. It truly made me realize how incredible space is. 🌔🌌🪐✨ To end the tour, we gathered around a fire, roasted marshmallows, and chatted together. It was such a warm and memorable way to finish the evening. I'm so happy I joined this tour! They even took wonderful photos for us, which made the experience even more special. XY HJune 13, 2026“Wow!” was the first word that escaped my mouth the moment I stepped out of the car. The sky was beyond anything I had imagined. Coming from Singapore, where a sky like this is simply impossible to experience, I was completely blown away. From the very beginning, everything was seamless. Clear instructions were emailed to us before the tour, making it easy to find our way. In fact, just a few days earlier, we had been comparing several stargazing companies before finally deciding on Chameleon—and what a fantastic decision that turned out to be. Karl and Estella were wonderful. They made everyone feel welcome and comfortable from the start, with thick blankets and hot chocolate to keep us warm under the night sky. Do make sure to dress warmly though, it makes the experience all the more enjoyable. What truly stood out was how much passion and knowledge they shared throughout the evening. We learnt so much about the stars and the night sky, all while gazing up at one of the most breathtaking views imaginable. As a lovely keepsake, we were also given a photo of ourselves beneath the stars. The photos I’ve attached to this review were taken using nothing more than my phone and are shared simply to show how incredible the visibility was that night and just how much we were able to see with our own eyes. The evening ended on a perfect note with toasted marshmallows around the fire and a little red-light keychain, which helps preserve your night vision while stargazing. Coincidentally, it came in very handy for me as I began chasing auroras the very next day! If you’re considering a stargazing experience, don’t hesitate, book with Chameleon. We were able to see so many stars, which made the experience even more unforgettable. Our guide, Mok, was wonderful — her explanations were not only very informative, but also very clear and easy to understand, so we truly enjoyed the entire experience. Before the stargazing session began, they provided blankets to keep us warm so we could comfortably enjoy the whole tour. One especially thoughtful detail was that the hot chocolate was served to us during the stargazing session instead of only before or after it, which made the experience feel even cozier. The marshmallow roasting session at the end also gave me nostalgic high school campfire vibes with friends. Grace TApril 10, 2026Wow! What an incredible experience with Chameleon Stargazing. We booked the 11:40PM tour and the night sky very much put on a show. Our guide Guthrie was absolutely brilliant - passionate, knowledgeable and engaging, he made the experience enjoyable with his infectious energy. The Milky Way was so clear and stargazing with our naked eyes was incredible. The use of two different telescopes gives amazing images of different stars and nebulas, and the surface of the moon during our tour! The location is a 5 minute drive from Tekapo village and easy to find. The set up was comfortable, with sofa / chair seating and as many blankets as you can wrap yourself in! Hot chocolate is handed out during the naked eye stargazing and you toast marshmallows around the fire at the end with an opportunity to ask the guide any remaining questions. Communication beforehand was good - due to weather changes, they provide a go/no go update around 30 minutes before your tour. The weather changes so rapidly (cloudy two hours before our tour), so be flexible and open minded. If you’re looking for a unique stargazing experience in Tekapo, Chameleon Stargazing is for you! While we were given the opportunity to do a short trial before committing to the entire night's tour, we chose not to. The team was so great though. Very communicative and kept us up to date on the forecast and what the options would be. We did receive a refund. Although we didnt get to experience what the night sky had to offer, I can only imagine the team at chameleon stargazing make it quite the experience. Stephanie MackApril 3, 2026This was a great stargazing experience! They had two high-quality telescope setups and the blankets/hot chocolate/marshmallows were a nice touch. It was very well organized and well-paced, starting with pointing out objects we could see with our naked eyes before moving on to looking through telescopes. Guthrie was our guide and was very informative - I really liked he also talked about Maori stories and navigation techniques with the constellations. Group size is small enough it's easy to ask questions and not feel rushed with the telescopes. Definitely recommend!Posted on Google

Samanta CazorlaMarch 18, 2026I highly recommend this stargazing tour. It was an incredible experience from start to finish. We were picked up directly from the parking area, and our guide was immediately warm and welcoming, which set the tone for the evening. Once we arrived at the field, everything was thoughtfully prepared: comfortable seating, large warm blankets, and later on, hot chocolate (or tea as an alternative). It made staying outside under the night sky truly enjoyable. Our guide explained many fascinating aspects of the stars and sky in a very clear and easy-to-follow way. Even though I already had some background knowledge, I still learned a lot, which speaks to how well the information was presented for all levels. They also provided two telescopes, one of which captured stunning images of nebulas (an absolute highlight!) To wrap up the evening, we gathered around a bonfire, enjoyed marshmallows, and had the chance to ask any remaining questions. It was the perfect ending to a memorable experience. paul edwardsMarch 15, 2026We booked private stargazing for Friday 13th. Weather was terrible during the day and, much to my concern, George wouldn't cancel, but said he will call it at 9pm. He was exactly right. Sky cleared and we had a fantastic evening. The guide was extremely knowledgeable, the equipment was first rate and george took some excellent photos of us. Our guide Mok was warm, engaging and funny as well as able to impart tons of information about the night sky to non astronomers in an easy to understand way. The group was small so the whole experience felt calm and relaxing, with everyone able to look at all the different objects through the telescopes without being rushed. The hot chocolate and toasting of marshmallows were a really nice extra and loved the pictures we go through by email. Don’t miss this experience if you are in the areaPosted on Google

The telescopes are great quality, and after the tour we got professional photos of us and from the telescope to keep, as well as a personalised star chart from the night. Adam BartkoNovember 23, 2025Honestly one of the best paid attractions we experienced in NZ. Mok was absolutely amazing — full of knowledge, energy, and genuine passion for what she does. If only everyone were that enthusiastic about their work. Even though we visited on a full-moon night and couldn’t see as many stars, the experience was still fantastic. We learned how to navigate using constellations, looked at various celestial objects through the telescope (all the things we observed were later sent to us by email) and ended the night roasting some marshmallows.Posted on Google

Lottie RickettsNovember 16, 2025Mok was absolutely fabulous - we had a really wonderful time learning and laughing about the night sky, seeing some incredibly beautiful constellations through the telescopes and having some very yummy hot chocolate and marshmallows. The tour was the perfect length and Mok kept us very entertained throughout - one of my favourites things we have done in new Zealand and it was really lovely to get to keep the photos of the night as a souvenir.
